Tummy time is often introduced early, but its importance goes beyond checking off a developmental box.
What It Helps Develop
Spending time on their stomach supports a baby’s ability to:
- Lift and turn their head
- Build strength through the neck and upper body
- Explore movement in different positions
It also helps balance out time spent on their back or in carriers.
Why Some Babies Resist It
Not all babies enjoy tummy time right away. Resistance can sometimes be linked to:
- Discomfort in certain positions
- A strong preference for turning one direction
- General tension through the body
Making It More Practical
Tummy time doesn’t have to happen all at once. Short, frequent sessions are often more manageable. It can also be done in different ways, including on your chest, across your lap, or using supportive positioning.
When it consistently feels difficult, it’s usually worth exploring why, rather than assuming the baby just “doesn’t like it.”
